Note when sizing a waterfall pay close attention to the "gallons per hour" (GPH). When searching for the pump include the height(lift) of the waterfall for example: waterfall is 2 ft wide and you need 1\4" thick flow over fall or weir , the chart lists " 540 GPH " but the proper pump must give you 540 GPH AT 6 FT. So the pump your searching for will be a higher flow pump , more than 540 gph because "the higher the lift the less water" Make sure the pump give you 540 gph at 6 ft. At wholespumps.com we list the performance chart for every pump and the feet of lift might not be exactly six feet but you can extrapolate between 5 feet and 8 feet for example to arrive at a 6 foot performance, and it is always better to size slightly larger because you can always choke the pump...

Be sure to search pump based on waterfall height(lift) , and flow over fall(weir) If your installation was there previous to you working on it you must check the pipe chart listed below. If your pipe installation is to small a diameter and to far from waterfall the pump will not perform to manufactures specs.

Pump-To-Pond Sizing It is recommended that the water in a basic pond be turned at least once per hour. For Example: if you have a 500 gallon pond, you need at least a 500 gallon per hour(GPH) pump. To calculate the volume of your pond in gallons, use the following formula: L = Length of pond in feet, W = Width of pond in feet, D = Depth of pond in feet. L x W x D x 7.5 = Gallons of pond Example: 10ft x 12 ft x 1.5 ft x 7.5 = 1350 gallons If your pump will be operating a waterfall or other water feature it's a good idea to use a pump with 25%-50% more flow than the pond volume. For instance if the above example pond had a water fall or other feature, we would multiply the 1350 by 1.5 (adding 50%). This would give us a pump requirement of 2,025 gallons per hour. Note: remember to include your lift. Example: The 2E-38N will give you 300 GPH at 1 foot but it will only give you 255 GPH at 3 foot. Keep in mind that it is always better to oversize your pump than use one with not enough flow.
